Class Y

HUNSLET (English) Imported in 1969. 530hp. Shunting engine. It gave a remarkable service since the introduction to Sri Lankan roaster. 27 units in service. One burnt at Orugodawatta and withdrawn from the service since 2001. SLR’s only shunting engine class in service.

When needed working on short distance freight trains also. (eg: oil trains from Kolonnawa) . But no records with passenger trains except once. Incident was an unauthorized train hauled with Class Y engine by ex-foreman of Dematagodata Running Shed Mr. H.L.R. Fonseka from Trincomalee to Galoya transporting Sinhalese people threatened by LTTE terrorists by attacking on them. Mr. Fonseka was interrogated for the incident. (Source: Local Newspaper article)
