Class M8

WDM2 (Varanasi India). 2600hp. First batch Imported in 1996. Second batch (1950hp) classified as M8a Slightly shorter in length than the first batch. Very powerfull, long and heavy locomotive. One loco engine can haul 20 carriages at once. Usually in operational level its maximum 18. Major problems are heavy rusting and maintenance difficulties. Can not go beyond Nawalapitiya due to sharp curve in up-country line. Normally not going beyond Polgahawela. Frequently operate in flat lands (Northern line, Southern line, Trinco and Batticaloa lines). Still in operation.
